Art 360: Art and Otherness

This student-driven seminar seeks to explore the idea of “otherness” from a Western perspective, beginning in early Modern Europe. How has “otherness” manifested itself in the visual arts? How pervasive is “the other” in today’s global society? We will examine art created by and in response to issues including: the early and long preoccupation with collecting Eastern art objects in the West; hateful racist imagery produced in America from the late 18th-century through Jim Crow; depictions of North Africa and its people in nineteenth-century French art; contemporary art created as a result of the current immigrant crisis in Europe; and the representation of Muslim womanhood in art and contemporary visual culture. Intensive reading, writing, class discussion are essential elements in this course.
