In this reading I kept coming across the term of “gaze”. This reading touched on a variety of them. There was the “white gaze”, the “female gaze”, the “hostile gaze” and the “homosocial gaze”. I thought it was interesting to hear of such a variety in such a short span of reading.

I also thought it was interesting to define what is manliness? It’s such a relative term. The definition changes and depends on the culture and time period. In this reading it said that “if manliness was a question of control, then the negro could not have been considered masculine” (Hatt, 192). It made me wonder, how does this apply to women/femininity?
